Our Philosophy of Gifted Education We believe that gifted students need a qualitatively differentiated program that takes into consideration individual learning styles and special abilities. The program should help develop self-esteem, skills in independent study, research, creative thinking, and critical thinking. The purpose is to develop the potential of each individual. Gifted students should be challenged to develop their abilities for personal fulfillment and the benefit of society.
These are our goals for gifted students:• Develop a positive self concept and attitude in relation to their own talents• Interact effectively with peers, adults, and society• Become self-directed learners who will explore content provided through a variety of formats• Communicate ideas of varying complexity commensurate with their unique talents• Use creative and critical thinking skills to solve complex problems• Develop original and advanced products indicative of their special talentsGifted and talented students at Comal Elementary are served through differentiation in the regular classroom. In addition, students participate in a pull-out program called SAGE, Significant Activities for Generating Excellence. Appropriately challenging learning experiences related to language arts, math, science, and social studies are offered at the elementary level. Curriculum is differentiated in content, process and/or product. Emphasis is placed upon activities that develop the student as a life-long learner.Meet Mrs. ErbenI have been teaching in Comal ISD since 1981. Most of that time has been at Comal Elementary. My experience includes teaching English and speech and drama at the high school level, reading and language arts in middle school, all subjects at the elementary level, English as a Second Language, and gifted and talented. I received my bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Southwest Texas State University (now known as Texas State). I am married and have a daughter who attends Texas A & M University. I love to read. My favorite books are mysteries and historical fiction. One of my favorite books is Running Out of Time by Margaret Peterson Haddix. |
